What is a developer? I dont mean the software developer or real estate developer, I mean a salon hair developer, well it is a product mixed with hair colour to activate it and enable the hair colour penetrate the cuticle. It contains hydrogen peroxide that either lifts or deposits the hair colour. You must mix a developer with a basic ingredient such as bleach or hair colour to activate it.
Why is developer important?
To get desired result after bleaching or colouring your hair, you must use a developer to enable the colour/ bleach penetrate the hair cuticle for the colour to infiltrate.
What do volumes mean and when do we use them?
Hair developer volume refers to its oxidizing potential. The majority of hair formulas Work with developers of volume 10, 12, 20, 30,40.
1) Volume 10 : The 10 volume developer is a standard oxidizing Level for permanent colour. It is used when you want to add a colour tone/tint to the hair of the same lightness Level. It also opens the hair cuticles allowing the hair absorb the colour.
2) Volume 20: The Level 20 opens the hair cuticle but unlike 10, it also helps to lift the hair by one or two Levels. E.g if you have 50% gray hair, you must use this volume 20 developer is the only developer for 100% hair coverage.
3) Volume 30: The volume 30 works like the volume 20 but will lighten the hair original colour by two to three and is more eficient when the desired colour is not more than two Levels lighter than the original colour.Choose this when you want a developer stronger than a lighter and deeper colour.
4) Volume 40: The volume 40 is the strongest and has the ability to produce significant changes. It will lift your hair four shades and is Good for blondes and high lift colours.
How do I use a developer?
Colouring your hair yourself is easy if you do it with care, begin by mixing the colour and conditioner by ratio 1: 3 and ensure you make enough to saturate your hair. Then wash with a shampoo and dry before applying vaseline or your hair protector to prevent colour staining. Next add colour to your roots as you Work your way down the hair while saturating evenly. Finally leave for 10-40 minutes.
I hope this helps and the next time you try colouring your hair, take a picture for me to see. Below is a picture of my own developer, i got it from an online store for five thousand naira in lagos, Nigeria.
