When you care for your work and personal life equally, that balance will come naturally. But a little discipline goes a long way. “Work while you work, play while you play”. Have sometime in the day, even if it’s an hour, where you put your phone and laptop away and do something you really like. I do this by keeping the work and life aspects of my day in two separate buckets. You need to compartmentalize the issues and situations that pull you in the direction of mixing the buckets. At times, work will take precedence over your personal life and vice Versa, but ideally, everything balances out eventually.
Tips to balance your work-life
1) I think you have to know yourself, know what makes you feel truly fulfilled. If you’re someone who requires exercise everyday, get some form of exercise on a regular basis. If you’re someone who requires some kind of visual assault, go for a walk in an area you’ve never been before and take it all in. Know what’s important to your self-preservation, and hopefully weave that into your day, week, your year.
2) I want you to also know what compels you to continue to grow. Is it other people? New situations? Repetitive situations? How can you continue to challenge yourself and grow into someone that you continue to feel is relevant and dynamic?
3) Schedule things on your calendar or your journal, don’t just be the disorganized person, I know it’s hard to keep up but you can do it. Always have everything written out and scheduled, it makes life much easier.
4)Get an hobby, I am among the few percent that when asked “what do you do for fun” I go blank for a second before I eventually start putting things together to say. But we all have something that comes to us naturally, so why not take it all in and do it at your leisure, there is a high tendency you will become good at it and that’s a good thing if you ask me.
5) Love yourself, so hard that you take this bold step to get a life-work balance for your own mental health, if not anything but for yourself.
